Why choose us?

Selecting a laser clinic and a doctor is a big decision!

So, here is a checklist of ten key considerations we believe will help you make that big decision. Naturally, there may be additional questions that are important to you, so please feel free to contact us by phone on 1800 458 888, or at any time via our enquiry form.

Choosing the clinic:

1. Do they use IntraLase?

Laser vision correction took a major leap forward with the introduction of IntraLase. Vision Eye Institute was the first clinic in Australia to use this remarkable technology, and is the most experienced. IntraLase is a uniquely safe, uniquely precise approach to giving predictably better vision. It is a special laser that replaces the microkeratomes that are currently used to create the corneal flap when LASIK is performed. IntraLase uses a computer-controlled laser process, not a blade, in order to create the corneal flap for LASIK. The end result is a flap with more consistent dimensions, created with less risk to the eye. All of which means more predictable and better vision.

2. Can they do customised (wavefront) laser vision correction?

Wavefront technology is another of the recent advancements in laser vision correction. This technology provides a measurement of the small optical imperfections that are unique to each person's eyes. Those lasers that have wavefront capability can then compensate for the eye's optical imperfections during the laser treatment, thus giving the patient a customised correction. This, in turn, can give an improved quality of vision after surgery.

3. Does their laser have a rapid active eye-tracker system to compensate for the involuntary movements of the eye during surgery?

It's always been important for a laser to be able to track the movements of the eye during surgery to ensure the laser energy is applied to the correct region of the cornea. However, it's now even more important for this tracking to occur if an accurate customised wavefront-based correction is to be achieved. Our lasers use unique eye-tracker technology which tracks the eye position at an extremely rapid rate. Furthermore, our current lasers are the latest of ten that the Vision Eye Institute doctors have acquired over the 16 years we have been doing laser vision correction. Refractive surgery is a rapidly changing field, and you can rest assured that Vision Eye Institute will always be at the forefront of the technology.

4. Are they saying the initial consultation is free?

Some clinics advertise that the initial consultation is free. People would not normally expect something as important as an assessment for a surgical procedure to be free, given the sophistication of the equipment that is required and the time needed to have a full discussion with you about the surgery. It's possible that something is being left out or cut short in a free consultation. At Vision Eye Institute the initial consultation fee is $150, and you will find that the assessment is very comprehensive. The surgeon will examine your eyes, outline your surgical options, and discuss your questions about the recommended procedure.

5. Are they able to do more than just laser surgery, if necessary?

Laser surgery is suitable for most people's eyes, but an alternative surgery, or no surgery at all, is advisable in cases where the prescription is too high or there are certain unusual features in the eyes. Vision Eye Institute is the only centre offering all refractive surgery procedures, thus enabling a customised approach to each patient's vision correction. Our refractive procedures include Conductive Keratoplasty, Phakic Implants, Refractive Lensectomy, Arcuate Keratotomy, PRK, LASEK, ASLA, and of course LASIK. Our refractive surgeons at VEI have performed over 20,000 laser surgeries since 1991, and hundreds more of the other refractive procedures. Though LASIK is certainly the most frequently used procedure, our doctors will be able to advise you if it is the best option for your eyes.

Choosing the doctor:

1. Is the doctor a refractive surgery specialist?

Our laser surgeons are actually specialists in refractive surgery, which means they are trained in using additional vision correction procedures, not just laser vision correction. They also specialise in corneal work. Most refractive surgery, especially LASIK, involves a delicate corneal procedure. This means that our refractive surgeons understand the finer points of corneal surgery, and that they can promptly and effectively deal with any unusual situation that occurs before, during, or after surgery. 2. Is the doctor recognised by his/her peers as a refractive surgeon?

We have published more journal articles and textbook chapters on refractive surgery than all other centres in NSW combined. Such publications are a powerful indicator of scientific recognition by one's peers. Additionally, our surgeons have lectured in many parts of the world, and have trained many other doctors to perform refractive surgery. And clinically, Vision Eye Institute is the place where other refractive surgeons send their most difficult and complex cases, the ones that require particular skill and experience. Additionally, numerous medical specialists, eye surgeons, and optometrists have chosen to have their laser surgery with us.

3. Has the doctor done at least 500 laser procedures in total, and does he/she perform at least 500 procedures per year?

We believe that it takes at least 500 cases for a surgeon to acquire the necessary experience to be an expert in the procedure, and that they need to perform it on a regular basis to remain highly proficient. Each of our surgeons has performed over 5,000 laser procedures, and each performs over 500 cases per year. Moreover, the surgeons at Vision Eye Institute were the first to perform laser vision correction in Australia, and the first to perform LASIK in New South Wales.

4. Will the doctor personally answer your questions during the initial consultation?

At your initial assessment, upon the completion of certain tests with our clinical staff, you will have a personalised consultation with one of our refractive surgeons. Our surgeon will advise on which of the various refractive surgery techniques is best for your eyes and for your visual needs, and they will ensure that all of your questions about the procedure have been answered.

5. How friendly and helpful are the staff when you make your first contact with the clinic?

All of our staff at Vision Eye Institute take pride in delivering outstanding customer service. When you call you'll find that they will not only be knowledgeable about the steps involved in laser vision correction, but they will take as much time as necessary to answer your questions. They will arrange to send you a video and information pamphlets about our eye procedures. All this even before you've come in for your first visit!
