IntraLase technologyIntraLase is a new and unique technology for creating the corneal flap required for LASIK eye surgery. The two main components of this technology are the IntraLase FS laser and the IntraLASIK software. The IntraLase FS laser uses a rapidly fired, very short duration (femtoseconds*) pulse of energy with a spot size of only 3 microns*. This creates less disruption to adjacent tissue, resulting in greater accuracy of effect. The IntraLase laser uses long wavelength energy (1053nm) that is not absorbed at the corneal surface but, instead, it passes through the tissue until it reaches the pre-programmed target where a microscopic bubble is produced. The IntraLASIK software places thousands of such microscopic bubbles alongside each other, resulting in a dissection plane (or 'cut') inside of the cornea. Finally, the IntraLase laser then 'cuts' through to the corneal surface, thereby creating a hinged flap which the surgeon is able to lift before commencing the corneal re-shaping using the excimer laser. Because of the remarkably small spot size and the femtosecond precision, surgeons are able to design very accurate incisions at any depth within the cornea, without the risk of damaging surrounding tissue. The flap diameter, shape, and thickness, and the position of the flap hinge, can be controlled by the surgeon with great precision. Additionally, the IntraLase laser creates the flap under very low vacuum, delivering the laser energy directly to the internal cornea through a disposable glass lens. The corneal surface suffers no trauma, and the procedure is completely painless. IntraLase has become a critical component of LASIK surgery in order to help achieve the best possible vision.
